EVC Based ITR Filings

Things are a bit easier now for the taxpayers with end-to-end e-enabled services in place, using which the Income Tax Return for A.Y. 2015-16 can now be verified via Electronic Verification Code (EVC), which is generated for the purpose of electronic verification of the person furnishing the return of income as per the data structure and standards specified by Income Tax Authorities.
Now a taxpayer can verify the Income tax return and will not be required to send the acknowledgement i.e. ITR-V to the Central Processing Centre, Bangalore. This is a welcome step from the CBDT which will not only reduce the wastage of time and paper work but will also hastened the process of processing the return.
EVC will be a unique ten digit alpha-numeric number linked to assessee’s PAN. One EVC can be used to validate one return, irrespective of assessment year or type of return.
Here it should be kept in mind that EVC generated via Aadhaar Card will be valid only for 10 minutes and in any other case, for 72 hours.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has prescribed four modes of Generation of EVC:
Net-Banking:

  • The assessee should have a bank account with validated PAN as part of KYC.
  • The bank should be registered with the Tax Department for this purpose.
  • The assessee can use this facility by using internet banking where he can seek redirection to e-filing website where he can generate the EVC.
  • EVC will be displayed and also sent to his validated mobile number registered with the e-filing website.

Aadhaar Onetime Password (OTP):

  • A verifier can provide his Aadhaar number for linking with his PAN on the e-filing website.
  • Name, Date of Birth and gender should be same on the Aadhaar card and the PAN.
  • Once Aadhaar authentication is successful, a onetime password (OTP) will be sent to Verifier’s mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
  • This one time password (OTP) can be used to verify the assessee return which will be valid for 10 minutes or as specified by UIDAI.

ATM of a Bank:

  • The assessee should have a bank account with validated PAN as part of KYC.
  • The bank should be registered with the Tax Department for this purpose.
  • A verifier can access to ATM using his Debit/Credit card using ATM PIN and generate EVC through the option as will be specified on the ATM screen.
  • A onetime password (OTP) will be sent on the assessee registered mobile number

Through registered e-mail ID and Mobile number with e-filing website:

  • The Total income of the assessee should be Rs. 5 lakhs or below and there is no refund claim.
  • EVC can be generated on the e-filing website and will be sent to the registered mobile number.
  • This option may further be restricted to assessee based on other risk criteria that may be determined from time to time.

Verification of return through EVC
All the taxpayers are eligible to verify their respective returns through EVC except the following:

  • Persons, whose accounts are required to be audited under Section 44AB;
