Jharkhand: GST Bill set to clear House hurdle today

The state government is set to enter the list of states that have adopted the state Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill on Thursday and enable the Centre to roll out the GST regime from July 1. On the recommendation of the state cabinet governor Droupadi Murmu has summoned a special session of the state assembly on Thursday in which the government aims to get the bill passed with minimum resistance.
The special session comes at a time when the principal opposition party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), has created a storm over chief minister Raghubar Das’s recent public speech in Littipara where he reminded people of its party chief Shbu Soren’s involvement in a bribery case.
Parliamentary affairs minister Saryu Rai have left no stones unturned over the past week to ensure the support of opposition parties during the special session. He called up JMM working vice- president and leader of opposition Hemant Soren to seek his support.
Even though BJP has a comfortable margin in the assembly to get the bill passed with majority support the state government is not in a mood to take on the opposition and go for vote division over a bill which has already been cleared by the Centre. “We want the assembly to pass the bill with general consensus for which cooperation of all big and small parties is necessary,” Rai said.
Without mentioning recent statements by the CM against JMM, Rai said that he held Guruji (Shibu Soren) in high respect. “If his (Shibu Soren) sentiments were hurt the party can chose a different platform to demonstrate its anger instead of the floor of assembly,” Rai said.
Rai also met speaker Dinesh Oraon a couple of days ago and the two discussed the conduct of business in house during the special session.
Hemant Soren has, however, kept the cards close to his chest and is yet to decide whether his party would support or oppose the bill on floor of the house.
JMM has decided to convene its legislative party meet and finalise the strategy one hour ahead of the scheduled special session on Thursday.
Enthused over its recent victory in Littipara bypolls, JMM leaders are likely to take an altogether different step during the special session when government tries to get a nod for the bill.
